If you do a google search, you’ll probably find a few people in the area offering handyman services. Or you might have heard from a friend about someone they recently used, and they seemed to “get the job done.”
You’ve got to be careful when looking for a handyman, though, because we’re not all created equal. Hiring the wrong person can get you into big trouble and invite some big problems into your house.
Licensed: When we say licensed, we’re not necessarily talking about simply having a business registered with the state of New York. We’re talking about being licensed within a respective trade, such as having an up-to-date electrician’s or plumber’s license.
Insured: Many of you will hire someone for your home repair because the job might be more dangerous than you’re comfortable with. This is especially true when you hire an electrician, but for some handyman services such as gutter cleaning it’s equally important to make sure that they’re properly insured. Uninsured or underinsured workers will sue you if they are injured on your property, and even if the claim is baseless or is covered by your insurance, it’s still going to cause you months or even years of frustration dealing with the problem. Save yourself these problems by making sure that the person you hire is properly insured.
Safety: If you’re dealing with a handyman who doesn’t have an actual business, you’re inviting someone into your house even though their driver’s license might not match the name that’s on their business card. This person might be an okay handyman, but he might also be scoping out the weaknesses of your home so that he can tell his friends at the bar the exact point to break into your home. Always make sure you’re dealing with a reputable business before inviting a handyman into your home.
